What is Ubahndoku?
Ubahndoku is a daily web puzzle built around the Berlin U-Bahn network. You get a 3x3 grid where each row and column carries a criterion, typically a U-Bahn line. Your task is to fill all nine cells with station names, and every station you enter must satisfy the criteria of both its row and its column. A station can only be used once per game, so each of the nine cells needs a different answer. The same puzzle is released for all players each day, and you can choose between Normal mode, which shows how many possible answers exist for a cell and offers suggestions, and Expert mode, where you must recall station names entirely on your own. You are allowed up to three mistakes per game, and scoring runs from 0 to 900, combining correctness with originality: rarer answers earn more points. If you get stuck, you can give up and view the solutions.
How Ubahndoku works
- Goal
Fill all nine cells of a 3x3 grid with distinct Berlin U-Bahn stations that satisfy each row and column's criteria.
- Your moves
- Select a grid cell
- Enter a station name matching the row and column criteria
- Choose between Normal and Expert mode
- Give up and view the solutions
- Reading the feedback
- Possible answer counts and suggestions
- In Normal mode, this shows how many valid stations fit a cell and helps you narrow choices.
- Error count
- Tracks your mistakes against the maximum of 3 per game; each one costs 20 points.
- Score
- Ranges from 0 to 900, combining a fixed bonus for correct answers with originality points for rare picks.
- When a round ends
You win by filling all nine cells correctly within the three-mistake limit; you can also give up to view the solutions. A new identical-for-everyone puzzle arrives daily, and archive puzzles are bonus games.
Your first round
- Choose Normal or Expert mode to begin the daily puzzle.
- Read the row and column criteria on the 3x3 grid, noting which U-Bahn lines each requires.
- Select a cell and enter a station where the relevant lines directly stop, avoiding transfers-only stations.
- Check that you have not already used that station in this game, since repeats are not allowed.
- Continue until all nine cells are filled correctly, keeping your mistake count under the limit of 3.
Easy to miss
- Line criteria count only stations where the line directly stops, not via transfers.
- A station cannot be reused within the same game, so all nine answers must be different.
- Each mistake costs 20 points, and three errors is the maximum per game.
- Originality points reward stations that few other players chose, so common answers score less.
