Overview

What is Chainle?

Chainle gives you clue words and asks for the single dictionary word that connects them. Each day brings five rounds, identical for every player: three rounds ask for a word that belongs with two clues at once, one round asks for a word that fits three clues, and one round asks for the word nearest in meaning to a clue. You submit exactly one guess per round, and it must be a single word of letters only. Scoring is based on meaning rather than exact matching — every word is described by 300 numbers representing what it means, and your guess is measured against each clue separately. Each round is worth up to 1,000 points, for a daily total of 5,000. After guessing, you see scoring chains showing how close your word came to each clue.

The rule card

How Chainle works

  1. Goal

Find the single word that best connects the round's clue words, scoring up to 1,000 points per round.

  2. Your moves
    • Type a single dictionary word as your guess
    • Submit one guess per round
    • View the scoring chains for each clue
    • Browse past puzzles in the archive
    • Share your results
  3. Reading the feedback
    Scoring chains
Each clue gets its own chain of up to 8 links showing how close your guess is to that clue.
    Full chain
Your word is as close as the strongest link, earning the full 1,000 points.
  4. When a round ends

A round ends after your one guess is scored, worth up to 1,000 points; five rounds make up the daily 5,000-point set, and a new puzzle arrives at midnight Eastern Time.

Step by step

Your first round

  1. Read the round's clue words to see whether it's a two-word bridge, three-word bridge, or closest-connection round.
  2. Think of one dictionary word that connects or matches the clues.
  3. Enter that single word — letters only, no plurals, names, or the clue words themselves.
  4. Submit your one guess for the round.
  5. Check the scoring chains to see how close your word came to each clue, up to 8 links each.
Rules people overlook

Easy to miss

  • One guess per round — there is no second attempt, so the chains only show how your single word performed.
  • Plurals are rejected, but British and American spellings both score the same.
  • Guessing a clue word, its variants, or a name is rejected, as are offensive words.
  • A word as close as the strongest link scores the full 1,000, so the intended answer isn't the only way to max a round.

Worked example

A round, step by step

The checked example shows how a two-word bridge round works. Pizza and pasta are the clue words, and tomato links them, so tomato is the intended answer and earns the full 1,000 points for that round. The example also notes that sauce and noodle score the full 1,000 as well, because words as close as the strongest link score the maximum — so you don't need to find the single 'official' answer, just a word that measures as close as the best link.
