Overview

What is Centumth?

Centumth is a daily guessing game built around a hidden Top 100 list. Each day there is one topic, and your job is to name entries from that list. The twist is the scoring: answers everyone would think of sit near the top of the list and score very little, while obscure 'hidden gems' ranked close to #100 score the most. You get five guesses per puzzle, and your score is the sum of the ranks you find, so a perfect game means uncovering #96, #97, #98, #99 and #100 for 490 points. If you draw a blank on a guess, it scores nothing. One free hint is available per puzzle if you need a nudge. After your five scoring guesses, Arcade Mode lets you keep digging through the list, and past topics remain free to replay from the archive. The game is free to play in a web browser.

The rule card

How Centumth works

  1. Goal

Find entries from the day's hidden Top 100 list, aiming for obscure answers ranked near #100 because they score the most.

  2. Your moves
    • Type a guess for the day's topic
    • Use the one free hint per puzzle
    • Keep hunting the list in Arcade Mode after your five guesses
    • Replay past topics from the archive
  3. Reading the feedback
The rank of a matched answer
Your guess is on the list, and that rank's value is added to your score.
    A miss
The guess is not on the list and adds nothing to your score.
  4. When a round ends

A puzzle ends after your five scoring guesses; the shared score is locked to those first five, and Arcade Mode remains for further hunting. A new topic arrives each day.

Step by step

Your first round

  1. Open the day's puzzle and read the topic.
  2. Enter a guess you think belongs on the hidden Top 100 list.
  3. See whether it matched; a match adds its rank to your score, a miss adds nothing.
  4. If stuck, use the puzzle's one free hint.
  5. Use your remaining guesses, favoring obscure answers likely to rank deep in the list.
  6. After five guesses, continue exploring the list in Arcade Mode.
Rules people overlook

Easy to miss

  • Low ranks score little and ranks near #100 score the most, so obvious answers are poor picks.
  • A perfect game requires finding #96 through #100, totaling 490 points.
  • Abbreviations usually do not count, but obvious typos are forgiven.
  • Only your first five guesses count toward the shared score; Arcade Mode finds do not change it.

Worked example

A round, step by step

In the example topic 'Top 100 Animals', guessing Dog lands near the top of the list, adding only a small amount because the most famous answer ranks high. Guessing Otter finds a mid-list rank, earning a moderate amount. Guessing Axolotl hits #96, a deep cut worth a large amount. Together these show the inverted scoring: the same three correct answers would score far less in a normal ranking game, but here the obscure pick is the valuable one.
