What is Word Grid?
Word Grid gives you a grid where every row and every column has its own category. Your job is to fill each square with a valid English word that satisfies both the category of its row and the category of its column at the same time. The twist is in the scoring: each word you enter receives a rarity score based on how often other players used that same word, and your goal is to keep the total as low as possible. That means the obvious, popular answer is usually the expensive one, while a less common word that still fits both categories earns you a better score. It is free to play on the web, and it adds social layers on top of the solve: a leaderboard, friends features, an archive of past puzzles, and the ability to create grids of your own.
How Word Grid works
- Goal
Fill every square of the grid with an English word that matches both its row and column categories while keeping the total rarity score as low as possible.
- Your moves
- Click a grid square to enter a word
- Choose words that satisfy both the row and column categories
- Prefer less common answers to lower your rarity score
- Reading the feedback
- Rarity score
- Each square is scored by how often other players used your word; a lower score is better.
- When a round ends
A round finishes when every grid cell holds a valid word meeting both of its categories, and the total rarity score determines how well you did.
Your first round
- Open the grid and read the category for each row and column.
- Click a square to enter a word that fits both its row and its column category.
- Continue filling squares until every cell contains a valid English word.
- Check your total rarity score, which is lower when your answers were less commonly used by other players.
Easy to miss
- Every word must satisfy two categories at once — the row's and the column's — not just one.
- Popular answers cost you: rarity scoring rewards words fewer other players chose.
- Words must be valid English words to count.

A round, step by step
Suppose a square sits in a row whose category is 'Starts with ph' and a column whose category is 'Five letter word'. Any word you enter there must meet both conditions at once, so 'phone', 'photo', and 'phase' are all valid answers for that square. Each of those words would earn a rarity score based on how often other players used the same answer — picking one fewer players chose would give you a lower score for that square.
