Overview

What is Originle?

Originle is a daily geography guessing game built around real people. Each day features a new guest who shares their own story through video and audio clips, and your job is to work out which country that person is representing through their roots and culture. The guest may live anywhere in the world, so the answer is about heritage, not current home. You start with a pool of 10,000 points and three guesses. Eight clues are available, each one easier than the last, but every clue you reveal costs points. Wrong guesses are expensive too, each one cutting your score by 30%. Even if you never land on the right country, you can still score for how close your guesses were. It is free to play in a web browser, and a fresh guest arrives at midnight Eastern time.

The rule card

How Originle works

  1. Goal

Identify the country today's guest represents through their roots and culture, using clues from their own story.

  2. Your moves
    • Watch the guest's first video
    • Reveal the next clue for points
    • Submit and lock in a country guess
    • Give up
    • Use the globe to take notes and shortlist countries
  3. Reading the feedback
    Remaining points out of 10,000
Shows how much your clue reveals and wrong guesses have cost so far.
Clue costs rising from 250 to 1,750
Later clues are progressively easier but more expensive to unlock.
  4. When a round ends

The round ends when you lock in a correct guess, use all three guesses, or give up; you still score for closeness even without a correct answer. A new guest arrives daily at midnight Eastern.

Step by step

Your first round

  1. Watch the guest's first video clip, replaying it with captions and sound to catch details about their roots.
  2. Reveal a clue if needed, noting that it deducts points from your 10,000-point pool.
  3. Mark candidate countries on the globe as a scratchpad while you shortlist.
  4. Submit a country guess and lock it in; a wrong guess costs 30% of your points.
  5. Repeat with easier clues or give up, and still score for how close your guesses were.
Rules people overlook

Easy to miss

  • Clue reveal costs increase with each clue, from 250 up to 1,750 points, so early reveals are the cheapest.
  • Each wrong guess costs 30% of your points, so guessing early is expensive.
  • You can still score for closeness even if you miss all three guesses or give up.
  • The answer is the guest's country of roots and culture, which may differ from where they live.
