What Pile of Tiles is
Pile of Tiles is a mahjong solitaire game where the goal is to clear the playing field by removing matching pairs of tiles. The tiles are arranged in stacked piles, so many of them start out blocked. You can only work with free tiles — those that are not covered by another tile and have at least one of their left or right sides open. When you combine two identical free tiles, both are removed from the board. Each removal can uncover new tiles, gradually opening up the pile. Removing all tiles from the layout completes the level and advances you to the next one.
How to play
Look over the pile and find a free tile — one that is not covered and has at least one left or right side open. Select it. Then find a second free tile that is identical to the first and select it as well. If the two tiles match, the pair is removed from the field. Keep matching identical free pairs this way, using each removal to expose tiles that were previously covered or blocked. When every tile has been removed from the layout, the level is complete and the next level begins with a new tile arrangement.
Tips
- Blocked tiles can't be selected, so focus on pairs among uncovered tiles with an open left or right side before committing to moves elsewhere.
- Removing a pair can free tiles underneath or beside it, so a well-chosen match opens up more options than it removes.
Common questions
Why can't I select a certain tile?
Only free tiles can be selected. A tile is free when nothing is covering it and at least one of its left or right sides is open. Remove nearby pairs to free it up.
What happens when I clear the board?
Removing all tiles from the layout completes the level, and you advance to the next level with a new tile layout to clear.
Do the two tiles need to be exactly the same?
Yes. Only two identical tiles can be combined and removed as a pair.
